54 Illegal Universities Operating In Nigeria

National Universities Commission ,NUC, Tuesday, said there are no 54 illegal universities operating in Nigeria.
Briefing journalists in Abuja, on an alleged existence of illegal universities in Nigeria,the Director Information and Public Relations, Ibrahim Yakassai said the Commission had earlier discovered over 50 unlicensed Universities operating in different parts of the country nine years ago and had taken steps to close the schools while currently prosecuting perpetrators of the act.
Yakassai noted that the Commission had set up a committee in partnership with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the Police that monitors and closes any university declared illegal by the Commission.
According to him, �NUC has a committee that closes down illegal universities and the commission is in partnership with the ICPC, the police and other law enforcement agencies.
�I want to say that there is no illegal universities currently operating in Nigeria that is of the knowledge of the NUC; Our Commission did not suddenly wake up to it responsibility of discovering 54 illegal universities”.
He said that the management of the National Universities Commission included a branded list that comprised the names of illegal universities and determined to consistently publish the names in its Monday Weekly bulletin to keep the public well informed.
�There is a list of 52 that has been close down long time ago, NUC is maintaining the list in the public domain through it Monday weekly bulletin to get people acquitted and also to make sure these names of the illegal schools become stigmatised and then no Nigeria will patronise such places”‎, he said.
The NUC official stressed that non of the operators of the schools had ever approached the Commission for operational licence, adding that procedures for establishing a university involves 14 steps and also require gestational period with heavy investment.
He noted, �The procedures involved in establishing a university in Nigeria is very stringent and it involves 14 steps moreso because owing a university is a very serious business ,we counsel them towards knowing that it should not be with the intention of making money but only service for humanity”.
Mr Yakassai however challenged any Nigerian who is aware of any illegal university operating in Nigeria to show up.
