Abubakar Yakubu has been elected president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), narrowly defeating Rita Daniels, mother of actress Regina Daniels, in a closely fought contest.
The election took place on Saturday during the guild’s annual general meeting in Benin City, Edo State, with Yakubu securing 116 votes to Daniels’ 113, while three ballots were declared invalid.
A seasoned actor and administrator, Yakubu succeeds Emeka Rollas and makes history as the first AGN president from northern Nigeria since the guild’s official registration in 1998.
A graduate of Dramatic Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Yakubu brings over 25 years of experience across television, film, and stage productions. He has held several key positions in the guild, including national secretary (2019–2025), national vice president, national treasurer, and public relations officer, demonstrating extensive leadership experience.
Rita Daniels had campaigned on a platform centered on member welfare and empowerment, but her bid faced controversy when outgoing president Rollas suggested she focus on family priorities.
In other election results, Ifeoma Okeke was elected as the new national secretary.
The AGN boasts a rich legacy of leadership, with former presidents including Larry Williams, Emma Ogugua, Zack Orji, Ejike Asiegbu, Segun Arinze, and Ibinabo Fiberesima.
Yakubu’s presidency is expected to bring a renewed focus on strengthening guild operations and advancing the growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, building on decades of experience in the sector.
