Angélique Kidjo Warns Musicians Against Praising Politicians In Their Songs

Grammy-winning Beninese singer, Angélique Kidjo, has advised fellow artists to steer clear of composing songs that glorify politicians or political parties, stressing that political power is fleeting and artists who align with it risk fading into obscurity when leadership changes.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Female Poets Society podcast, Kidjo recounted her father’s counsel, urging her never to create music for any political group because such alliances often end with the downfall of those in power.

The legendary singer noted that musicians must maintain independence and authenticity by voicing their own opinions rather than becoming mouthpieces for politicians.

She said, “My father always used to say to us, especially to me as a singer, do not write music for any political party because they come and they go, and once they’re gone, you go with it.

“Write your music with your opinions, be free writing your music. Don’t be sold to somebody because therefore, you don’t become the voice of the people anymore, you become the voice of the power. And when that power shifted, you’re off the window.”

Kidjo further urged artists to focus on representing the people through their craft, adding that musicians who stay true to their message will ensure their music remains timeless, regardless of political shifts.
