Nigerian hip-hop star Emeka Akumefule, widely known as Blaqbonez, has clarified that his rap feuds in the music industry are real and not crafted to gain attention.
During an interview on Apple Music 1’s Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida, the “Back in Uni” hitmaker stated that his competitive streak stems from a desire to build a strong legacy, not from publicity tactics.
“No, it’s not PR. It’s about legacy; the type of rapper I want to be seen as. Everything I do is for the image I’m building and the legacy I want to leave,” he said.
Speaking about his fourth studio album, No Excuses, Blaqbonez revealed that the project showcases his artistic evolution and reflects his relentless drive to surpass his past work.
“I’ve made three albums already and it felt like I had set a crazy standard. With each album, I have to try to outdo the other ones. I went into the studio determined to make my discography even better. One day, I saw a book titled No Excuses, and it hit me — that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I put in everything so that when I release it, I have no regrets, no excuses,” he explained.
The rapper described No Excuses as one of his proudest milestones, emphasizing that it represents his growth and dedication to his craft.
“It’s one of my proudest accomplishments. Each album stands tall, and this one takes it to a different level. Four albums in, and every one of them is fire. I’m so proud of myself,” he said.
According to him, the project draws heavily from real-life situations and emotions, making it a true reflection of his journey.
“My life is multifaceted. If something crazy happens, I talk about it. If I’m having a chill or emotional day, you’ll hear it. Even if somebody’s billing me too much, I’ll put it in the music. It’s just my life; raw and real,” he said.
On the album’s production, Blaqbonez praised the efforts of renowned producers such as Jae5, Blaze Beats, Tellz, Ramoney, and Ragee for helping him achieve the sound he envisioned.
“I didn’t cut any corners. Before you even talk about my verses, you can already tell the production is crazy,” he added.
