A British citizen who was recently killed while being held hostage by people suspected to be militants in the Niger Delta region has been identified as Ian Squire.

Report has it that Ian, was an optician who was providing free medical aid to people in the Niger Delta region before he was kidnapped.

A Facebook user, Chris Kehinde Nwadu has called out the kidnappers for killing the British national who came to render free medical care to people in Nigeria. He said: These Niger Delta Guys (Militants ) Are Just Idiots and ingrates .How on earth could you kidnap and kill a British Doctor who came to give free medical assistance to your people.

“Tufiakwa…RIP Dr Ian Squire, the 57-year old British optician who was on his fourth visit to Burutu, Delta State in Nigeria’s South, on health charity work, when he was kidnapped on 13 October and later killed by militants”

Also, the Archbishop of Canterbury has sent his condolences to the family of the deceased over the sad incident.

Archbishop Welby wrote on Facebook: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ian Squire, the British man who we learned today was killed while being held hostage in Nigeria.

“Ian, an optician, was in Nigeria providing free vital medical aid to people. We pray for his family and friends as they come to terms with his death, and for the three other hostages who will have to deal with the mental and physical scars they suffered while in captivity.

“We pray for the areas in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria where there are high levels of crime and tension for peace, restoration and reconciliation and God’s kingdom to come in those communities and across all of Africa.”
