Chike Opens Up About Why He Walked Away From Regular Church Attendance

Singer Chike has shared an intimate look into his faith journey and explained why he no longer feels at ease attending traditional church services.

He recounted a moment from several years ago when he unexpectedly ran into someone from his past during a church service. The encounter left him feeling extremely uncomfortable, making it impossible for him to continue attending that church.

“The person leading the praise and worship… we had a history. I started having flashbacks while she was performing, and I just couldn’t focus,” Chike revealed. The experience was so awkward that he decided not to return, though he clarified that his faith in God remained intact.

“This wasn’t about doubting God, because I still believe in Him,” he said. He reflected on a challenging time early in his career when he lived in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend. “I just prayed. I said, God, I don’t have anyone, I don’t have anything. Please help me,” he recalled.

Chike also touched on a bewildering episode shortly after his debut album dropped, when he unknowingly ingested a potent edible. “Three, four days after my album release, I had no idea where I was,” he admitted.

Despite keeping his spiritual beliefs, Chike explained that the routines and expectations of organized church life do not suit him. “Church just isn’t for me. There are things I enjoy that I wouldn’t be able to do there,” he said.

Ultimately, the singer emphasized that the essence of living a meaningful life, whether personally or as a leader, is treating others well. “It’s about doing right by people, by the people, by the people. Being Christian doesn’t necessarily mean living a perfect Christian life,” he added.
