Afrobeats heavyweight David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has set social media buzzing after suggesting that the Nigerian music scene would be far less exciting without his influence.
The singer made the comment on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, writing, “Imagine no Davido…. Sht [the music industry] would have been boring AF.”*
The statement immediately divided opinions online, with some fans agreeing with his self-assessment while others accused the multiple award winner of exaggerating his importance in the industry.
Davido has previously described himself as a major force in Nigerian music. During an April 2025 interview with Apple Music, he recalled that the industry felt unusually quiet during the period he stepped away from social media after the tragic death of his son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, in November 2022.
He claimed that during the three-month hiatus, both supporters and critics repeatedly called for his return, an experience he believes highlighted his significance within the music space.
The singer’s rise to stardom dates back to 2011, when he broke into the mainstream with his hit single Dami Duro. His emergence coincided with the rise of a new generation of Afrobeats stars, including Wizkid, who would go on to shape the global sound of Nigerian music.
Despite his achievements, not everyone shares Davido’s view of his impact. Veteran producer Samkleff has argued that Davido’s arrival marked the beginning of heightened rivalry and tension within the industry. According to him, Nigerian artists previously enjoyed a more harmonious relationship before Davido’s rise.
The contrasting perspectives have once again fueled debate over Davido’s influence, relevance, and lasting legacy in Nigeria’s ever-changing music industry.
