#EndSARS: Only Accounts Of Companies Were Frozen, Not Individuals – Justice Tsoho

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho has come out to say that the court never intentionally froze accounts of promoters of the recent #EndSARS protest.

He recently revealed that contrary to media reports, the court only froze accounts of some corporate entities the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, that were accused of sabotaging the country’s economy.

According to him, 3 months before the protest, the CBN kept bringing lots of applications based on what they call deliberate resolve to ruin the economy through money laundering, therefore something had to be done.

He added that if it was #EndSARS protesters that were involved in the activities under cover, it is wrong for anyone to vilify the court and make damaging allegations against it.

His words, “Three months before the protest, the CBN kept bringing applications almost in their hundreds based on what they call deliberate resolve to ruin the economy through money laundering.

“So if it was the #Endsars people that were involved in the activities under cover, then it is unfortunate for people to begin to call and vilify the court, making damaging allegations against the court.

“If steps were not taken at that time, the Nigerian economy would have collapsed, that is to say about three months ago, the dollar would have exchanged far above N500.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi. Since 2012, SARS has come under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian Army Colonel was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.

SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

During its formation the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was known to operate covertly. SARS operatives were not allowed to wear police uniform, publicly carry guns or have walkie-talkies. They were given unmarked vehicles with sometimes no license plates or private plate numbers during duty.
