#EndSARS Protests Is Now A Looting Spree – NURTW

EndSARS Protests

EndSARS Protests

The Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has urged #EndSARS protesters to end the protests after the destruction to life and properties that have trailed it.

Prof. Tajudeen Baruwa, its National President revealed this recently in Abuja and Nigerians have been reacting.

According to him, even if the citizens started everything peacefully, their good cause has been hijacked by hoodlums for destruction and looting spree, therefore something has to be done.

He added that the NURTW has already directed state chairmen and members across the country to work with relevant stakeholders to urge protesters to send their grievances to the appropriate quarters.

His words, “The nationwide EndSARS protests have taken a very dangerous dimension.

The protests, which were intended to be peaceful, have been hijacked by hoodlums resulting in the killing of innocent citizens, looting and wanton destruction of properties and national assets.

“I appeal to the protesters to kindly discontinue the protests as the situation has now turned into a looting spree.

“The NURTW has already directed state chairmen and members across the country to work with relevant stakeholders to prevail on the protesters to channel their grievances to the appropriate quarters.

“The youths should not allow themselves to be used for violence; they should equally desist from burning Police Stations and killing security personnel.

“We commiserate with families of those who lost loved ones to the protest and pray to God to give them the fortitude to bear their losses.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi. Since 2012, SARS has come under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian Army Colonel was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.

SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

During its formation the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was known to operate covertly. SARS operatives were not allowed to wear police uniform, publicly carry guns or have walkie-talkies. They were given unmarked vehicles with sometimes no license plates or private plate numbers during duty.
