Mexico’s Fatima Bosch Claims Miss Universe Crown After Turbulent Pageant

Fatima Bosch of Mexico has clinched the Miss Universe title in Thailand, rising above a wave of controversies and unexpected disruptions that dominated this year’s global beauty contest.

The pageant featured more than 120 contestants, with finalists from the Philippines, Thailand, Venezuela, and the Ivory Coast joining Bosch in the final lineup. But the road to her victory was anything but smooth.

Tension escalated days before the finale when Bosch came under fire from Thai pageant host Nawat Itsaragrisil, who allegedly criticised her for not sharing enough promotional posts online. The situation prompted Bosch to stage a bold walkout—dressed in an elegant gown and heels—alongside Miss Iraq.

Addressing the incident at the time, Bosch stated: “What your director did is not respectful: he called me dumb. The world needs to see this because we are empowered women and this is a platform for our voice.”

Her stance drew applause from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who described Bosch as “an example of how we women should speak out” against disrespect or aggression. Nawat later apologised for his comments.

The contest also experienced internal setbacks, including the abrupt withdrawal of two judges just before the final show. French composer Omar Harfouch went public with claims that an unauthorised vote had taken place, asserting: “This vote was conducted by individuals who are not recognised members of the official judging panel.” The Miss Universe Organisation swiftly denied the allegations, insisting that “no impromptu jury has been created.” Another judge, former footballer Claude Makelele, exited the panel citing “unforeseen personal reasons.”

There were on-stage mishaps as well. Miss Britain Danielle Latimer fell during the national costume segment, while Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry suffered a fall in the evening gown category that led to hospitalisation. According to Shannon-Dale Reid, PR director for Miss Universe Jamaica, Henry was “resting under medical observation” and did not sustain major injuries.

Despite the turbulent atmosphere, Bosch triumphed, securing the Miss Universe crown and bringing a dramatic end to one of the most chaotic editions of the pageant in recent years.
