Mohammed Adamu Should Tell Nigerian Police Officers To Stop Extorting Citizens – Senate

Mohammed AdamuThe Senate has begged the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to decrease the number of checkpoints on Federal highways across Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Special Assistant (Press) to President of the Senate, Ezrel Tabiowo.

Tabiowo believes it has become vital to do it not just because of the festive season but because that is how it should be henceforth.

The lawmakers added that Mohammed should also tell officers of the Nigeria Police Force to desist from the habit of extorting Nigerians.

The statement read, “We appeal to the Inspector General of Police to as a matter of urgency review the number of checkpoints on Lagos-Onitsha federal highway with a view to scaling them down and all other federal highways in the country not only as a result of the coming Yuletide festivities but all times from now going forward.

β€œFurther appeal to the IGP to direct his men on the road checkpoints to wear human face while attending to the motoring public and eschew all forms of extortion as is commonly alleged, while carrying out stop and search and the establishment of the validity of the vehicle particulars of vehicle owners.”

Mohammed Abubakar Adamu is the Nigerian Inspector General of Police. He was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on 15 January 2019 replacing Ibrahim Kpotun Idris (rtd) of Niger State. Mohammed Adamu hails from Lafia, in Nasarawa State.

Before his appointment as Inspector General of Police, he was an Assistant Inspector-General of Police in Benin City, Edo State and was responsible for the overall management and operations of the NPF Zone 5, comprising Bayelsa, Delta and Edo State police commands.

He was born on 17 September 1961 and enlisted into the Nigerian Police Force in 1986, after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with a bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Geography. He also holds a master’s degree in International Criminal Justice System from the University of Portsmouth, England.

Amongst others, he was awarded as 2015 Best Commissioner of Police in community policing in Nigeria.
