Multiple explosions rock Nigeria’s capital Abuja; scores feared dead

abuja-bokoMultiple explosions were recorded in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja on Friday night. They were believed to have been caused by the detonation of improvised explosive devices by suspected members of terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

Two explosions reportedly occurred around Kuje area of Abuja, the first going off in front of the Kuje police station while a second explosion occurred at the town’s main market, 15 minutes apart from each other.

A third explosion was reported at Nyanya Bus Station thereafter.

Casualty figures from the explosions have not been officially established but many people are feared dead.

It will be recalled that Nyanya was the scene of two bombings in 2014, leading to scores of death. Aside the suicide bomb attacks at the Nyanya bus park, Boko Haram earlier carried out a devastating attack at the United Nations headquarters in Abuja in August 2011.

President Muhammadu Buhari during his independence day speech had stressed that his administration was working hard to solve the insurgency problem in the country and that Boko Haram had been substantially weakened.

The chief of army staff, Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai and other service chiefs have assured that the December deadline issued by the president, to completely defeat Boko Haram, will be met.

Friday night’s bomb attacks in no less than the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is perhaps an indication that a lot has to be done by the armed forces and intelligence services in defeating the terrorists.
