Minority leader of the House of Reps, Ndudi Elumelu (PDP-Delta) has come out to say that the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) should give Nigerians reasonable time to submit their NIN for SIM registration.

He recently revealed that the recent 2 weeks deadline given by the NCC for all Nigerians to register will be very difficult to work with.

According to him, even if the idea of SIM registration with NIN is a good thing, the 2 weeks must be extended for citizens to adhere to it.

He added that the timing is off because Nigerians have not been properly sensitised, and only the few that read newspapers will bother to read about the recent instructions.

His words, “Therefore, trying to enforce this policy in a period where most Nigerians are gearing up for Christmas festivities may lead to stampede in the process of rushing to get registered.”

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is the independent regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria. The NCC was created under Decree number 75 by the [Federal Military Government of Nigeria] on 24 November 1992.

The Decree has been abrogated and replaced with the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003. Umar Garba is the present head of (NCC) assumed office since 2015.

The commission is headed by a board of nine commissioners, composed of the Chairman (a non-executive commissioner), the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, two Executive Commissioners, and five other non-executive commissioners.

The Offices of the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO; and the Offices of the other two Executive Commissioners also have established and functional administrative structures. The International Affairs Unit is part of the Office of the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive.
