Nigeria Mourns Iconic Live Band Maestro Akiin Shuga

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Akinloye Tofowomo, fondly known as Akiin Shuga, the founder and bandleader of Shuga Band and Managing Director of Shuga Entertainment and Shuga Limb Foundation.

In a family statement signed by Femi Dare and released on Monday, November 3, his passing was confirmed to have occurred in New Brunswick, Canada. The statement described the renowned performer as “a revered music icon, Grandmaster, and Managing Director of Shuga Entertainment — Nigeria’s most prestigious live band.”

The family paid glowing tribute to the late musician, describing him as “a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance,” adding that his artistry and mentorship over the last three decades helped redefine the standard of live music in Nigeria.

According to the statement, “Across more than three decades of excellence — on stage and in mentorship — he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose. To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution: a true king in his art.”

They further appealed for privacy as they navigate their grief. “As the family comes to terms with this immeasurable loss, they humbly request privacy and quiet reflection at this deeply difficult time,” the statement added.

The family expressed appreciation to everyone who has reached out with sympathy and prayers, assuring that details of his memorial and funeral arrangements would be released later.

“The family extends heartfelt appreciation to all who have reached out with prayers, tributes, and kind words. Akinloye Tofowomo’s legacy — through the Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment — will continue to live on,” the statement read.

Akiin Shuga, who became a symbol of inspiration to many through his music and resilience, is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
