The President, Women Arise, and Centre for Change, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin has come out to beg all tiers of government to immediately implement policies that would address the grievances of Nigerians amid the #EndSARS protests.

Okei-Odumakin recently revealed that being violent in dealings with citizens is now a thing of the past and the government never wins with such an approach.

According to her, Nigerians are very angry with the deprivations and poverty and they just need their leaders to do something positive about it.

She added that now is the time to address such frustration and hopelessness of Nigerians that have made decent living impossible for millions of our people.

Her words, “It is time to now address such frustration and hopelessness that has made decent living impossible for millions of our people.

“Staggering youth unemployment and high cost of living needs to be addressed.”

“The horrendous damage done to businesses and infrastructure also has to be taken account of by those concerned and a way forward plotted.

“A state yet to recover fully from months of COVID-19 lockdown cannot endure another long lockdown without harsh economic consequences.

“It is important that normalcy return as soon as possible while government brazes up to do the needful in terms of responding to the root causes of the crisis.

“We are saddened by the lives of patriotic youths lost and the quantum of destruction witnessed.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi. Since 2012, SARS has come under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian Army Colonel was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.

SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

During its formation the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was known to operate covertly. SARS operatives were not allowed to wear police uniform, publicly carry guns or have walkie-talkies. They were given unmarked vehicles with sometimes no license plates or private plate numbers during duty.
