Nigerian music star Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has spoken about her pride in being Nigerian while expressing regret that the country’s current state forces many citizens to seek opportunities elsewhere.

During a recent appearance on the 90s Baby Show, the Joromi singer said what she admires most about Nigeria is the unbreakable spirit of its people, describing it as something that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

“My favourite thing about Nigeria is just the spirit of Nigerians. You can’t replicate it,” she said.

Simi added that being Nigerian is an identity that cannot be faked, noting that even in Hollywood, actors avoid trying to imitate Nigerian accents.

“Nobody else can be a Nigerian other than a Nigerian. Even when they are faking African accents in Hollywood movies, they never actually fake a Nigerian accent. They always fake East Africa and South African accents. Being a Nigerian doesn’t just come as naturally, it just feels like home,” she explained.

Despite her pride, the singer admitted she wishes Nigeria were a better country, one that offers citizens reasons to stay rather than leave.

“That is why I wish the country was better. Because I feel like no one would want to leave,” she added.

Simi’s remarks capture the bittersweet emotions many Nigerians feel — a deep love for their homeland paired with frustration over its struggles and unfulfilled potential.
