Brigadier General Ahmed Taiwo has come out to say that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was misinformed on the number of casualties at the Lekki Toll Gate protest ground.

He recently revealed that the governor had earlier said two persons died at Lekki, but both of them were not at the protest scene.

According to him, no protester sustained injury nor died at the Toll Gate, and the victims Sanwo Olu mentioned actually lost their lives at Admiralty Way and Yaba respectively.

He added that he slept on the street every night to guarantee the safety of Nigerians amid the protests, so he knows what he is talking about.

His words, “On 20th October 2020, at about 6.30 pm, while we tried to speak with the protesters and negotiate with them, they pelted stones at us and we had to fire blank bullets at protesters.”

“Any picture that you (lawyers) want to present here must be submitted to forensic test.”

“No protester sustained injury nor died. The two people Governor Sanwo-Olu mentioned did not die at the scene; one died at Admiralty Way, which is three kilometre away from the Lekki Tollgate.”

“The second person was shot at Yaba.”

“I was sleeping on the street every night, making sure the place is safe.”

“Most of the videos in play have been manipulated.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi. Since 2012, SARS has come under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian Army Colonel was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.

SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

During its formation the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was known to operate covertly. SARS operatives were not allowed to wear police uniform, publicly carry guns or have walkie-talkies. They were given unmarked vehicles with sometimes no license plates or private plate numbers during duty.
