There are many dangers associated with the porn industry, but you probably never thought cyberbullying was one of them.

In a tragic turn of events, 19-year-old Alyssa Funke killed herself after being cyberbullied in the weeks following a video release for the amateur porn site CastingCouch-X.

A freshman at the University of Wisconsin’s River Falls, Funke was a straight-A student who used the stage name “Stella Ann” and professed that she wanted to major in biology and become an anesthesiologist, both things she would never fulfill after taking a shotgun to her head on April 16.

According to KMSP, Alyssa started receiving the taunting messages on Facebook and Twitter just a few days after the video was posted. Most of the harassment came from her former peers at Stillwater High School.

It was apparently a huge deal (as it would be for the dull lives of high schoolers) and students were seen hovering around their phones during lunch. One student sent a tweet that said, “Wow your a thot” – slang for a prostitute – and posed the question: “Does her dad know?”

Another wrote, “Nothing brings a school together like a porn star who graduated last year. I guess you could say news spreads fast here at Stillwater hahah.”

Although Funke projects a strong front and confident attitude in her tweets, it was only two weeks after the video was posted that Alyssa drove to a boat landing on Big Carnelia Lake and killed herself with a 12-gauge shotgun.

KMSP suggests the cyberbullying definitely played a large part in Funke’s decision to take her own life.

However, the victim’s parents claim that their daughter, who leaves behind 9 siblings, also suffered from depression. Let this tragedy serve as further reiteration that there is never any need for mean comments and hateful words on the Internet.

Anyone with the smallest shred of common decency should know that, just because you can say something, doesn’t mean you should.
