The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has said that the success or failure of the newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), will depend entirely on President Bola Tinubu’s political will to confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. The group recently revealed that the country cannot afford to waste any more time, and Nigerians have been reacting.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA shared that President Tinubu must grant the new minister full permission to implement security reforms for him to succeed.

According to him, Musa’s quick nomination, less than 24 hours after former minister Mohammed Badaru resigned, is praiseworthy, and the Commander-in-Chief remains constitutionally responsible for national defence outcomes.

He stated that competence alone will not deliver the required results without sufficient support from the Presidency.

“The president must give the defence minister the free hand to implement a holistic strategy to rebuild the national defence architecture. If the minister is not empowered to act, or if the presidency does not provide clear direction, no meaningful progress can be made,” it read.

The group further urged the Senate to speed up Musa’s confirmation, stressing that his appointment has received broad public approval.

Emmanuel Onwubiko concluded by saying that the retired general must hit the ground running and implement effective measures to reduce terrorist attacks, kidnappings and banditry across Nigeria.

“Nigerians want results, not rhetoric. General Musa has the experience.

What he needs now is the full support of the President to confront escalating violence and restore public confidence in the nation’s security system,” he added.
