Rapper T.I Opens Up On Why He Stays Away From Church Despite Being Christian

American rapper Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., popularly known as T.I, has explained why he no longer attends church services, even though he strongly identifies as a Christian.

The Atlanta-born musician disclosed that he was brought up in a deeply religious household and has never questioned the existence of God. According to him, his decision is not rooted in disbelief but in disappointment with what organized religion has become.

Speaking during a conversation with gospel singer Kirk Franklin, T.I said his upbringing exposed him to prayer and scripture early in life, but church as an institution never resonated with him.

“I have never been a church person. I grew up in a strong Christian household. My grandma and auntie were very strong in prayer. So, I know how to pray and I know the word. And I know God is real, I’ve seen his presence and his hands in my life. But I have never felt the connection with the church,” he said.

The rapper went on to criticize modern church practices, describing many services as overly theatrical and lacking spiritual depth. He argued that some religious leaders focus more on performance and profit than genuine faith.

“To be honest, I don’t think the church is real. I think it’s a business. It’s like a show. It’s like public-speaking, like TED talk. And sometimes, the clergies try to twist the word of God to benefit them,” T.I stated.

He also expressed discomfort with teachings that link financial contributions to answered prayers, making it clear that he does not believe money should determine one’s relationship with God.

“Y’all telling me.. I gotta pay this joker.. for my God to hear my prayer??? Mehn I’m outta here,” he said.

T.I concluded by stressing that his faith is personal and does not require an intermediary, adding that he believes a direct relationship with God is more meaningful than one filtered through religious institutions.
