Uduaghan to pay N116m for gold medals

Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, will cough N116 million reward for gold medal winners who represented his state at the EKO 2012 National Sports Festival. As part of his motivational moves, the governor had promised each gold medalist N1 million, so in redemption, Uduaghan will pay N116 million added to the commitments for each silver which is N500,000 each and bronze which also runs into millions of Naira.

Aside from the progressive training programme Delta State adopted for the Eko 2012 Sports Festival, the cash incentive promised by Uduaghan gave Team Delta athletes the extra push to go for gold in all their various sports. Understandably, the cash reward of N20 million offered by the Federal Government for the state that emerges the overall winner in the EKO 2012 National Sports Festival will also come in handy for Delta State athletes and their officials.

It would be recalled that on November 27, 2012 during the opening ceremony of the 18th National Sports Festival, President Good Luck Jonathan ably represented by the Vice President, Architect Nammadi Sambo, had announced cash rewards to the first three states on the medals table in the tune of N20million, N15 million for second position and N10million for third position.

The cash reward from President Jonathan is the first in the history of the National Sports Festival where the Federal Government offers such amount as a motivational factor to propel states to jostle fairly for the top position in the games.
