Fuji legend KWAM 1 has firmly rejected growing criticism questioning both his Ijebu heritage and his decision to contest for the prestigious Awujale stool of Ijebuland.
The debate intensified after the music icon formally submitted his application last Wednesday to be considered for the throne, which became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona in July at age 91, bringing an end to his historic 64-year reign.
Since publicly declaring interest, discussions—especially on social media—have been dominated by doubts over whether KWAM 1 is a true indigene of Ijebuland. Many commenters have argued that his lineage is uncertain, igniting a wave of online scrutiny.
During a recent performance, an emotional KWAM 1 addressed the controversy head-on. He insisted that his roots are authentic and not up for debate. While defending his lineage, he referenced his ties to the Fidipotemole and Fusegbunwa families of Ijebu-Ode, adding that those casting doubts were doing so only because of his interest in the royal position. In his words, “If you are questioning my lineage at this point, we will meet at Popo… If it is because of the kingship I am vying for, it is my right; you cannot shut me up.”
To strengthen his argument, the fuji maestro invoked the memory of the late Awujale, stressing that Oba Adetona would never have conferred on him the highly respected title of Olori Omo-Oba if he did not come from a legitimate royal lineage. He maintained that the former monarch was a man of integrity and sound judgement, saying Awujale was not someone who would bestow such an honour carelessly. He added that he was calling on the late king’s spirit to “reveal what is hidden” amid attempts to distort the truth.
KWAM 1 insists that his ancestry not only connects him deeply to Ijebuland but also gives him every right to seek the throne. He maintains that no level of public debate or criticism will erase the legitimacy of his heritage or his qualifications for the Awujale title.
