The All Progressives Congress has said that 2nd-term governors who seek immediate elective positions after completing their tenure will automatically lose their party leadership roles. The party recently revealed that the decision ensures fair competition in primaries and prevents any undue advantage.

The party’s National Headquarters shared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) deliberated and decided on the rule, and under the APC’s constitution, the committee holds overriding authority over state, local government and ward chapters.

According to APC, the committee has the final say when it comes to party activities and leadership structures across the federation; therefore, their decision is law.

The party stated that the nomination of acting state party leadership will immediately be effected by the National Party Leader as soon as a term-limited governor declares a new political ambition.

Reiterating that the decision will ensure free and fair primaries for all aspirants within the party, APC insisted that the president and sitting governors will have the first right of refusal to contest for a second term in office.

The party confirmed that for other elective offices, every aspirant must emerge through transparent and credible primaries where candidates capable of delivering votes for the party will be chosen.

The ruling party noted that no governor has the right to impose candidates, as the list forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must be names who genuinely stand a good chance to win such primaries.

The clarification further reaffirms APC’s plans to boost transparency and fairness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
