President Muhammadu Buhari has come out to say that it is sad to see how the peaceful #EndSARS protests in Nigeria have been hijacked and misdirected by hooligans and miscreants.

He recently revealed that his administration cannot fold its arms and allow these criminals to perpetrate all kinds of bad acts under his watch.

According to him, he has already accepted all the #EndSARS demands from Nigerians and immediately scrapped it before beginning the process of addressing the other demands from the protesters.

He added that he would keep improving good governance via our democratic process because his aim is to preserve the unity of Nigeria.

His words, ”We accepted all the demands and proceeded immediately to scrap SARS and started the process of addressing the other demands.”

”Unfortunately, the protesters refused to call off the protest and engage the government to address their grievances. Instead, they became emboldened and gradually turned violent.”

”We will continue to improve good governance through our democratic process including through sustained engagement.

”We shall also continue to ensure that liberty and freedom, as well as the fundamental rights of all citizens are protected.

“Here, I want to also reaffirm our commitment to preserving the unity of this country.”

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a Nigerian Police Force unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi. Since 2012, SARS has come under controversy for being linked to acts of extortion, torture, framing and blackmail.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad was founded in 1992 by former police commissioner Simeon Danladi Midenda. The major reason SARS was formed was when Col. Rindam, a Nigerian Army Colonel was killed by police officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.

SARS is one of the 14 units in the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department which was established to detain, investigate and prosecute people involved in crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of crimes.

During its formation the Special Anti-Robbery Squad was known to operate covertly. SARS operatives were not allowed to wear police uniform, publicly carry guns or have walkie-talkies. They were given unmarked vehicles with sometimes no license plates or private plate numbers during duty.
