Sabinus
Popular skit maker Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has reflected on the early resistance he faced at home when he chose comedy over his father’s dream of seeing him become a lawyer.
Speaking with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father strongly wished for him to study law. After several unsuccessful attempts to secure admission into a law program, he opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. His stay on campus became the turning point, as he discovered skit-making and gradually embraced the world of comedy.
According to him, things were rough at the beginning and his father had no idea he was already pursuing comedy behind the scenes. Sabinus said, “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport. It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming.”
He noted that his father only found out after graduation, when he began appearing on promotional posters for comedy events — something his sisters quietly confirmed. The revelation sparked anger at home. “He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus recalled.
However, the comedian said everything changed once his father saw that the craft was paying off. Over time, the older man softened his stance, eventually offering full support, especially after Sabinus began earning from his work and even surprising him with monetary gifts.
