Ekiti state hunters have finally expressed confidence in their readiness and ability to put an end to clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

The hunters made this known in an interview with The Punch, as they complained that they were always under constant harassment from police.

Chief Taiwo Bamisile the president of Ekiti Hunters Association said they were happy when Governor Ayodele Fayose asked them to defend the state. He said: “We were elated when the governor engaged us to join in the efforts to liberate the state and protect it from the menace of the killer herdsmen. We are happy with the governor’s efforts and we will support him with all our power. But let me say that our members are constantly harassed by policemen when they see them with guns.

We have been involved in many rescue efforts in the past. An example was when we rescued kidnapped victims and handed over the kidnappers to the police in Esure. We have been working together with the police and we do not nurse any fears. We have always been in the forefront; what we are waiting for is further briefing from the government on operation mode.”

Also, the spokesperson of the group, Chief Adebayo Odeyemi said the governor warned them not to take laws into their hands. He said: The governor has told us to be cautious in our operation. We were warned not to take the laws into our hands. The governor has told us that anyone that kills will be killed. So, we are to operate with caution.

We are prepared for the task. We hunters can rise to the occasion because there is no time the government calls us that we won’t answer.”

Tope Olowookere who is the chairman of Ekiti Hunters Association of Nigeria in Ado Ekiti went further to say: We are happy that the government is involving us in the security arrangement. Hunters are active both day and night. With the government’s support, we will achieve a lot. If government provides the necessary tools that will aid our job, we will excel. We need to be mobile for effective surveillance. We need motorcycle to go deep into the forest so that we can comb everywhere. The motorcycle will get to where cars can’t get to.”
