Aminu Tambuwal
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has released former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal. He was released one day after being detained over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189 billion.
Tambuwal, who presently represents Sokoto South in the Senate, gained his freedom hours ago after meeting his bail conditions.
The former governor, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, had honoured an EFCC invitation on Monday, arriving at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja at about 11:30 a.m.
He was subsequently interrogated and detained overnight.
According to EFCC sources, the withdrawals Tambuwal was questioned about violated the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
“The withdrawals were in flagrant violation of the Act,” one official said, stressing that investigations were ongoing.
Speaking on Tuesday night, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that Tambuwal had been released.
“He has been granted administrative bail. He met the bail conditions and has been released,” the source said.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has come out to deny claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that its probes into opposition figures are politically driven.
The anti-graft body recently reiterated its non-partisan stance, and Nigerians have been reacting.
Recall that the ADC has shared that the agency keeps going after opposition leaders with “politically motivated” summons.
The coalition party alleged that the latest cases were only opened in response to political affiliation rather than fresh evidence.
“Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest, or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption.
“Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated, and there is no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations,” the agency added.
