Governors of the 19 Northern States and Chairmen of the region’s Traditional Councils recently met in Kaduna State. The meeting was aimed at reaching far-reaching resolutions to tackle the escalating security challenges confronting the North.

Held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, the gathering brought together the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council to deliberate on issues affecting the region and Nigeria at large.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, Chairman of the Forum, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya, revealed that the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to unity and stability of the Northern region.

Stressing that cooperation among states remains vital to tackling emerging threats, the forum expressed condolences to the Governments and people of Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa and Kano States over the recent killings and abductions of schoolchildren and other citizens.

In one of its major resolutions, the forum reiterated total support for the establishment of State Police, urging federal and state lawmakers from the region to fast-track the legislative process required to actualise it.

According to the Governors, illegal mining has also been a key driver of insecurity; therefore, it is best for the president to direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining activities in the North for six months.

They stated that the suspension would aid a comprehensive audit and revalidation of all mining licences in consultation with state governments.

The Governors further hailed President Bola Tinubu for his efforts that led to the safe and swift rescue of some abducted children.

They concluded by hailing the sacrifices of the security personnel engaged in counter-insurgency operations nationwide.
