The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, has called for a transparent and independent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State. He recently had his say via a press statement, and Nigerians have been reacting.
Stressing that the investigation should establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths, Oshiomhole stated that the conditions under which the detainees were held, the medical attention provided to them and those who survived, and the actual cause of the loss of lives, must be determined.
He added that the fact that the deceased were arrested on allegations of illegal mining did not remove their right to humane treatment.
