Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon has weighed in on the identity crisis surrounding the England national team. He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and fans have been reacting.
Insisting that the Three Lions must stop trying to mimic the technical mastery of Spain, Gordon revealed that England must embrace its own athletic roots rather than chasing a style that simply does not fit the English DNA.
Gordon added that sharing a dressing room with eight members of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad has proved that Tuchel’s assessment was entirely accurate.
His words, “I think culturally it’s not just that tournament or that game where we couldn’t control the game.
England as a nation, we don’t have that strength like the Spanish, where we control games like they do.
It’s not in us, I’m not sure it’s something that can be taught. I think playing in Spain, I can speak with an educated view, and the way they keep the ball is different. I’m not sure we can ever get that.
We know how to keep possession, but it’s the decision-making of certain players in Spain which just isn’t a natural thing.
I even look at some of the decisions they take on the ball sometimes and think, ‘I’m not sure how you’ve seen that.’ They’re definitely built differently.
I feel like we are trying to replicate Spain. Because I’m in Spain now, I know we’ve got just as good players, but they have different qualities.
Why try and make the players the same as the Spanish players? Because the Spanish players lack the things that we have, and vice versa. I think we need to stop looking elsewhere as a country, and be proud of who we are.”
