Arsenal legend Paul Merson has blasted Mikel Arteta’s treatment of teenage prospect Max Dowman after the youngster’s dismissal in the Carabao Cup. He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and fans have been reacting.
Criticizing the manager for appearing visibly furious on the touchline, Merson argued that the Spaniard was unnecessarily harsh on the young prospect as he left the pitch.
Paul added that rather than direct strong words at Dowman, a more supportive approach was required in that moment.
His words, “I’d be more interested to see what Mikel Arteta said to him when he was walking off.
This didn’t look good to me at all.
If that’s [Viktor] Gyokeres, who’s an experienced international, he isn’t doing that – but he does that to a 16-year-old kid?
He’s not the last person to get sent off for Arsenal, nor the first. If it was me, I’d have put my arm around him.
It’s still 1-1, they’re still in the game. We all say things in life we wish we hadn’t and if he could have that back, he’d do it differently.”
