Why We Rejected Venue For Peter Obi’s Lecture – OAU

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has explained why it withheld approval for a lecture by Peter Obi. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, recently had his say via his X page, and Nigerians have been reacting.

Reacting after Obi raised alarm over what he described as a worrying pattern of cancelled university engagements across the country, Abiodun revealed that the lecture could not hold because organisers gave OAU barely a day’s notice.

He added that the institution had to take action after it was unable to put the necessary security and logistics in place.

His words, “It is important to note that events involving high-profile personalities of such standing require adequate prior notification to the university authorities because it will enable the institution to make necessary logistical and security arrangements, including proper liaison with relevant security agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), in order to ensure the safety of the guests, members of the university community and the general public.”
