The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 16 Headquarters, Yenagoa, AIG Paul Odama has come out to warn officers and men of the Bayelsa State Police Command against engaging in extortion, bribery and corruption.

He recently had his say while speaking to the press, and Nigerians have been reacting.

According to him, his mandate is to ensure there will be no problem of corruption in the country henceforth, and that can only happen if the police is doing their job the right way.

Paul added that members of the force must be clean if they want to rid Nigeria of the dirty-minded citizens who are supposed to be leaders.

His words, “Then, there is a problem of extortion. If the police were doing their job there would be no bribery and corruption in Nigeria, because that is our mandate. We have the right to arrest, we have the right to apprehend, detect, to prosecute.

If the police are doing their job, there will be no problem of corruption in Nigeria. And before we can arrest anybody who is corrupt, we must also have to clean ourselves because he who goes to equity must go with clean hands. So we must be mindful of that. I know your CP has been talking to you about it, and the top management team has zero tolerance for corruption. Make sure you take care of yourselves.

There are many consequences. Any police officer who improperly conducts himself will be disciplined. It ranges from reprimand, even to dismissal. So there are consequences for any police officer that disregards any disciplinary measures.”
